The incumbent will work in the field and will assist professional staff in the collection of ambient water quality data for lakes, rivers, and streams in Minnesota. Duties include trip preparation, field data collection, sampling processing, equipment decontamination, and data entry.
Candidates must be enrolled in an environmental studies, environmental science, water resources, environmental science, conservation, chemistry, environmental engineering, or biology program working on a bachelor’s or master’s degree or completing their associates degree in an environmental field and moving on to a bachelor’s degree program.
To be eligible for appointment as a Student Worker you must be a student enrolled in an educational program or planning to enroll within three months. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as student workers, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. As a student you must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate program. If a student is enrolled at a credit-granting institution he/she must carry at least six semester (nine quarter) credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, a student must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load shall be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.
Ability to operate a motorized watercraft.
Experience operating a vehicle pulling a trailer.
Experience loading and unloading a trailered watercraft.
Good communication skills
The incumbent will be in the field 100% of the time. Must be physically able to perform field work associated with monitoring projects. This many include loading/unloading vehicles and boats with field equipment, trailering and launching boats, and working on potentially unstable stream banks. Capable of some physical exertion in summer heat and sun. Work can take place in inclement weather.
Must have the ability to travel 90% time
When the position requires travel and the applicant drives a state owned or leased vehicle, a driver's license and record check will be conducted. This position required driving and requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not exceed 26,000 pound
