La Crosse County Health Department, La Crosse, WI Is seeking qualified candidates to fill the following position Public Health Sanitarian.

Inspects and investigates dwellings, restaurants, retail food stores, septic waste systems, wells, hotels, schools, public buildings, mobile home parks, taverns, tattoo shops, campgrounds, swimming pools, beaches, lead hazards, animal bites, rabies program follow up, and other establishments and enterprises under the purview of state and county governments for compliance with state statutes, administrative codes and county ordinances. Coordinates activities with other County Human Services divisions and County Departments, city and local municipalities, and state agencies. Conducts Dept of Natural Resources' mandated sanitary surveys/well investigations and inspections. Serves as a resource for partner counties in environmental health programs (e.g., Radon). Investigates human health hazards, public health nuisances, diseases, outbreaks and complaints. Issues verbal and written orders to correct or abate human health hazards and public health nuisances. Coordinates activities and consults with industry on issues of environmental health importance. Initiates citations and other legal enforcement procedures. Provides documentation and testimony in court proceedings. Collects food, water, radiation and other samples for laboratory analysis. Participates in Beach Water Sampling and Monitoring. Provides consultation and presentations to the general public, schools, agencies, and local officials. Prepares reports as required by supervisor. May be asked to provide oral reports on program efforts or evaluation results to the Health and Human Services Board and other groups. Keeps records and creates reports utilizing various software and data technology. Assists in developing, evaluating, and maintaining codes, policies, and standards of environmental health to include quality improvement processes. Utilizes traditional media and social media, as befitting the audience; may serve as a department spokesperson on program work areas or as assigned. Prepares news releases, presentations, reports, and educational materials to communicate to the public, community partners, funders and decision makers regarding health issues and the work of the department. Uses appropriate medium to effectively communicate to intended audience. Conducts disease investigation on communicable disease incidents and outbreaks as responsibility is assigned. Conducts communicable disease interviews. Participates in mosquito trap setting and collection with University partners. Attends training sessions and meetings to maintain current knowledge of community, environmental, and public health related issues and policies as appropriate. Participates in the Public Health Emergency Plan and responds to public health emergencies as needed. Participates in Department and community emergency response training and drills consistent with job classification in support of public health emergency and disaster preparedness. Demonstrates integrity and honesty in all aspects of the work. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and development by pursuing educations, participating in professional committees and work groups and contributing to a work environment where continual improvements in practice are pursued. Responsible for using quality improvement (QI) and performance management (PM) processes and/or techniques to improve the effectiveness of the respective public health program. This includes but is not limited to: creating, implementing and evaluating performance standards and identifying, implementing and assessing program quality improvement processes.

Position Requirements:•Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in environmental health or public health. May also consider a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or microbiology.
•Preference for two years environmental health work experience in a state or local public health department.
•Health Specialist/Registered Sanitarian preferred at hire or must obtain within two years of hire.
•Availability to work occasionally on nights and weekends to complete inspection duties and respond to emergencies.
•Possess valid driver's license and have access to reliable means of transportation for county­ wide travel in all types of weather.
•Must be able to be fitted and wear NIOSH 95 mask, which may require limited facial hair.
•Must be certified by the State of Wisconsin as a Registered Sanitarian (RS) or by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) as a Registered Sanitarian/Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS). May need to be certified as a Certified Soil Tester and Private Onsite Waste Treatment System Inspector if working in the onsite waste program. If not already a Registered Sanitarian or Registered Environmental Health Specialist, must be eligible to qualify for the Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian Exam or National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) Registered Sanitarian/Registered Environmental Health Specialist Exam except for the experience requirement. Must complete the required training courses and training exercises within 2 years and sit for and pass the RS or REHS exam.
