Hennepin County Is seeking qualified candidates to fill the following position Trainee Environmentalist.

Position Description:

The Public Health Protection Area of the Public Health Department is seeking an Environmentalist Trainee to join their team. The Environmental Health unit performs inspections in the areas of food, pools, lodging, and septic.

Location and hours:
This position will be located at 479 Prairie Center Drive Eden Prairie, MN 55344, and additional travel throughout the county will be required. The hours for this position will be Monday-Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position may include occasional evenings, weekends, and possibly some holiday hours.

About the position type:
This is a limited-duration (benefit-earning), entry-level, temporary position with a possibility for permanent placement upon successful completion of the training program.

In this position, you will:

Inspect restaurants for compliance with federal, state, and county food protection ordinances and inspect and monitor special event and farmer's market stands.
Educate, train, and advise on food safety issues and investigate food/waterborne disease outbreaks.
Inspect licensed public swimming pools, lodging facilities, septic systems, and children's camps for compliance with state and county ordinances.
Resolve public complaints related to food safety, public health nuisances, smoking, housing, and other issues.
Develop educational materials on various environmental public health topics for the public.
Develop and implement other environmental public health programs for public awareness and/or compliance (radon, body art, and lead).
Participate in Public Health Emergency Preparedness planning, training, and response.

Position Requirements:

Bachelor's degree or higher in natural or physical sciences, natural resources, environmental studies, environmental health, engineering, industrial hygiene, or closely related field. *Note: Students that are enrolled in a degree track in a qualified field are eligible, but must continue to be enrolled, and must commit to obtaining an eligible degree within 2 years, in order to maintain eligibility for the trainee program.
A valid driver's license, the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit, and access to reliable transportation.
Ability to:
Commit to 40 hours of work per week.
Show strong interest and commitment to public sector career goals.
Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the various individuals served by Hennepin County.
